Critical raw materials (like rare earth elements) are required for sustainable development and the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources. The question therefore arises as to how a growing world population can be supplied with mineral and energy resources over the long term in a sustainable manner. Providing resources for future generations economically by using environmentally sound and socially accepted practices has become and will remain a major global challenge.
