Today, the term ‘resource nationalism’ is increasingly used in the context of mineral resources and the mining industry. According to the ‘political risk outlook 2021’ of the risk-consulting firm Versik Maplecroft, the trend towards an elevating resource nationalism already started in 2017 and is predicted to continue until 2023 (Blanco and Machando, 2021). This trend is also predicted to be fuelled by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, as national governments will seek opportunities to secure additional sources of income to fight the negative impacts of Covid-19 (Blanco and Machando, 2021).
