Many mining operations around the world are located too remotely to render a connection to the public power grid economically feasible. Those sites are located ‘off-grid’ and need to supply the operation self-sufficiently with power. Until today, this is predominantly achieved by large diesel generators (gensets), fuelled with diesel or heavy fuel oil (HFO), resulting in significant GHG emissions. With the increasing trend towards decarbonisation of the mining industry, off-grid mines need to shift to REs and install RE technologies, such as wind turbines, solar PV, hydropower plants or geothermal plants.
