The geology of some deposits allows a mine operation to start as an open pit operation while developing an adjacent underground operation. An example is the Oyu Tolgoi porphyry deposits in Mongolia. These are part of a large porphyry copper-gold system consisting of a number of deep and shallow orebodies.
