The concept of sustainability – the ability to sustain – is a concept going back to the 18th century. In 1713, the German mining administrator of Kursachsen in Freiberg (Saxony), Hans Carl von Carlowitz3.2), published the book ‘Sylvicultura oeconimica’ (‘Sustained forest yield’), which was the first book focussing entirely on forestry (von Carlowitz 2011).
