The MiReBooks project was initiated in 2018 with a proposal created by a consortium of 14 partners, led by Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL), to apply for funding from EIT Raw Materials. The proposal was approved, and with funding from EIT Raw Materials and co-funding from the partners, the project ran from 2019 to 2021.
During the funding period, key achievements included the development of the first MiReBooks prototype, which integrated Mixed Reality (MR) with traditional mining education. This innovation transformed static content into interactive learning tools, incorporating 3D models, simulations, and animations to make complex mining concepts more accessible.
The content, covering essential mining topics, was created by authors from the consortium and enhanced with MR features.
By the end of the funding period, MiReBooks had established a foundation for future volumes. Montanuniversität Leoben continued to allocate resources for the ongoing development and publication of the series, with the first book published in 2024, supported by TUBAF.

MiReBooks is an innovative educational project aiming to transform traditional learning by integrating Mixed Reality (MR) technologies into textbooks and lectures. The primary goal of MiReBooks is to create an immersive learning experience that makes educational content more interactive, engaging, and accessible. By allowing students to visualize and interact with 3D models, animations, and simulations directly embedded within the textbooks, MiReBooks enhances the comprehension of complex topics and bridges the gap that often exists in traditional mining education, where physical visits to operational sites can be challenging.
This transformative educational approach is realized through two key components:
By using a smartphone, tablet, or MR headset, students can engage with the textbook content in a dynamic way. These devices reveal additional layers of information, such as interactive 3D models, animations, and videos. This immersion makes learning more engaging and allows students to explore the material from multiple perspectives.
MiReBooks enhances students‘ skills by using digital devices and software to interact with 3D models and simulations. This hands-on engagement allows students to explore complex concepts, improving understanding of the topic in a digital environment.
MiReBooks bridges the gap between traditional and digital education. By combining physical textbooks with MR technologies. Students benefit from the familiarity of printed materials while also engaging with modern digital tools that meet current generational needs and expectations.
MiReBooks makes it easier for students to grasp difficult concepts. By bringing static content to life through interactive elements, students can better visualize abstract ideas, leading to improved comprehension and long-term retention of the material.
In summary, MiReBooks represents a significant step forward in the way mining education is delivered, combining the strengths of traditional textbooks with the immersive and interactive potential of MR technologies. This approach not only enhances the learning experience but also equips students with the digital skills and knowledge necessary for the evolving demands of the mining industry.
MiReBooks makes mining education more accessible to a broader audience, including those who may not have the opportunity to visit mining. Through MR, students can virtually experience real-world scenarios and complex industrial processes from anywhere.
MiReBooks aligns with contemporary educational goals. By fostering a digital education ecosystem and enhancing digital skills, MiReBooks prepares students for the future workforce, particularly in industries like mining that are increasingly reliant on digital technologies.
